Bronze statue stolen from Kildare roadside RTE News
A sculptor whose work has been stolen from along the side of the main Dublin to Cork road in Co Kildare has claimed a gang is now targeting public art for robbery in the recession.
Willie Malone's bronze creation - entitled the Hitchhiker - was valued at more than €30,000 and went missing from its site near Monasterevin.
Supt Patrick Kavanagh said the bronze piece weighed more than 1000kgs and was more than three metres tall.
Supt Kavanagh said the statue was stolen as part of a sophisticated operation.
Mr Malone says he is very disappointed about the robbery and even more surprised to hear his work was not covered by insurance and cannot be replaced.
